History Club: Exploring the History of Schools OUT wih Sue Sanders

 

For our first History Club of the season we are very excited to be joined by activist, writer, and Emeritus Professor Sue Sander to explore her story of political activism.

 

Sue Sanders is an Emeritus Professor at the Harvey Milk Institute, she is the author of poetry, short stories, and articles on feminist issues, equality, education, and homophobia, and an “out and proud” lesbian and LGBT rights activist;

 

Sue became chair of Schools OUT UK in 2000. She was a founding member of the LGBT Advisory Group to the Metropolitan Police and worked closely with the criminal justice system on hate crime after the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry.

In 2004 she instituted the UK's first LGBT History Month, an annual event which happens every February.

In 2007 she was responsible for the website The Classroom, which has over 80 lesson plans that ‘usualise’ LGBT people in all their diversity for all ages across the curriculum. She co-runs OUTing the Past, an annual international festival of LGBT history.

 

Join Sue Sanders, in exploring and celebrating this diverse history, herstory, their story.  In this talk we will learn how it all started, and how it's led us here today.
